- The second function of Swan Lake, scheduled for June 1, opens in response to public outcry and as a tribute to the birthday of Tchaikovsky, the composer of the work. The announcement comes on May 7, the day his birth is commemorated.
- This will be the first time in the city that this iconic work is presented with live music, thanks to a partnership between Filarmed and the Medellín Metropolitan Ballet.
- The production features more than 90 artists, including dancers and musicians.
Live music from one of the most iconic works of the classical repertoire will once again fill Medellín's Metropolitan Theater: Swan Lake, acclaimed by the public and with sold-out tickets for its first performance on Saturday, May 31, will have a second date on Sunday, June 1 at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are available at latiquetera.com.
The announcement is not accidental: this May 7, the day on which the second date is announced, marks the birth of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the Russian-born composer of the work, who forever changed the history of ballet. With this news, Medellín not only honors his legacy but also responds to the enthusiasm of hundreds of people who didn't get tickets for the first performance.
The music will be performed live by the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra (Filarmed), with a demanding score rarely heard live in the country. Meanwhile, the Medellín Metropolitan Ballet Company will bring each scene to life with its choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. A piece that became a standard of classical ballet and remains the basis for most productions worldwide.
The commitment of these two cultural institutions not only marks a milestone for Medellín, but also sets a precedent for the way classical ballet and symphonic music are experienced in Colombia: a fusion that showcases local talent in a high-level artistic event.
"ANDThis alliance with the Medellín Metropolitan Ballet is a way to bring art closer to the public and continue strengthening our city's cultural heritage. It's not just about uniting two institutions, but about creating experiences that emotionally connect with audiences through high-quality productions. Swan Lake is a work that demands both technically and emotionally, and bringing it to the stage alongside our musicians and dancers is a wonderful challenge that elevates our work and allows us to grow as artists and as an institution.” María Catalina Prieto Vásquez, executive director of Filarmed
“Swan Lake allows us to honor the tradition of classical ballet and, at the same time, the purpose of making this dance an artistic experience for all citizens. This collaboration with Filarmed celebrates what we deeply believe: that art is built in dialogue, on stage, and with the city,” he says. Juliana Acosta Pérez, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Ballet of Medellín.
The event is supported by Comfama and the Mayor's Office of Medellín, reaffirming the commitment to bringing the great works of the universal repertoire closer to the public. Four guest dancers will also be on stage, including a performer from the Dominican National Ballet and three dancers from the MusiCreando Academy.
Tickets are available at www.latiquetera.com and offers discounts for Comfama members. These discounts are limited by category and location.
Reasons not to miss the concert
It was Tchaikovsky's first ballet: Although today it is one of the most famous works in the classical repertoire, Swan Lake was the first ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky at the age of 36, already a renowned master of musical drama. He wrote it between 1875 and 1876, little imagining that it would mark a turning point in ballet music.
Although its premiere in 1877 was not well received, today it is the most performed ballet in the world. Its music has been adapted for film, television, video games, and even pop homages. Celebrating its birth with the announcement of an additional performance is, in itself, a tribute to the composer. This is the first time in the country that a Colombian ballet company and philharmonic orchestra have produced this classic.
Synopsis of the work
This story tells the life of Odette, a young princess trapped by a spell that forces her to turn into a swan during the day and regain her human form only at night, beside an enchanted lake. Her destiny changes when Prince Siegfried finds her during a hunt and falls in love with her. Odette reveals to him that only pure and sincere love can break the spell. But deception appears during a ball at the castle, when Von Rothbart, the sorcerer, presents his daughter Odile disguised as Odette. The prince, unwittingly, betrays his promise. With an unforgettable score and scenes that have marked the history of ballet, Swan Lake It is the voice of Odette: a story of freedom, love and redemption in the face of the power of the spell.
