"Music is a reflection of the soul, a gateway to history and the deepest emotions. This concert immerses us in a dialogue between two great composers who, from opposing perspectives, captured their vision of the world."
— Manuel López-Gómez, guest conductor

The Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra (Filarmed) presents the third concert of its 2025 Season “Raíces” with Tribute to Ravel and Shostakovich: opposing roots, a presentation commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maurice Ravel and the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri ShostakovichTwo creators of contrasting styles who, between impressionist subtlety and expressive power, left an unbreakable musical legacy.

  • A tribute to musical diversity: In addition to Ravel's genius in Suite from My Mother Goose and the intensity of the Symphony No. 12 of Shostakovich, the evocative warmth of Midday on the plain, by Antonio Estévez, and the Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin, by Wagner, add new dimensions to the concert.
  • A sound journey full of contrasts: From the serenity of the Venezuelan plains to the intensity of the Russian Revolution, the program interweaves landscapes, fairy tale stories, and historical episodes through works that explore emotion, drama, and musical grandeur.
  • Manuel López-Gómez's address: With an outstanding track record on prestigious stages, the Venezuelan maestro will contribute his interpretive vision to this meeting of sound worlds, guiding Filarmed through a night of nuance and depth.

Music of contrasts and evocations!

The program is a journey through landscapes, emotions, and stories that transcend time and space.

Midday on the plain, by Antonio Estévez, opens the evening with a serene and luminous evocation of the Venezuelan landscape, where the music breathes with the breadth of the plain. It is followed by Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin, by Wagner, a work that envelops the listener in an ethereal and majestic mysticism.

Ravel's delicacy is present with the Suite from My Mother the Octo, a score that transforms children's stories into dreamlike sounds, with subtle and colorful orchestrations. In the closing, the intensity of the Symphony No. 12 in D minorShostakovich's 1968 opera takes us to the harshness and drama of the Bolshevik Revolution, a work that, beyond its apparent triumphalist tone, contains layers of irony and resistance.
