WHAT WE DO

In the metropolitan area of Medellín, music is not just heard—it changes lives. The Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra – Filarmed develops social programs that bring symphonic music to metropolitan communities, turning each note into a tool for community transformation.

We create spaces where children and youth across the metropolitan area discover their talent and their voice. Where people affected by violence find a place to heal and dream again. Where music becomes a bridge for reconciliation, emotional well-being, and community building.

The Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra reaches schools, hospitals, and neighborhoods throughout the Aburrá Valley with the power of music as a vehicle of hope. Whether in Medellín, Envigado, Itagüí, Bello, or any other municipality in the region—we are there with Filarmed, because we believe everyone deserves to be part of the symphony.

Every chord played by our orchestra can be the beginning of a new story of social transformation in the metropolitan communities of our region.

Our Programs

¨¨

Soy músico

This is our pioneering program in inclusion and accessibility—a vital space for youth and adults with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. “I Am a Musician” is a free environment where over 100 people each year strengthen their musical identity, build community bonds, and reclaim a fundamental social space. To break down barriers, we bring our workshops to various municipalities in the Aburrá Valley, improving access for those facing challenges. This commitment earned us the prestigious Kennedy Center Award in 2024, making us the first cultural organization outside the United States to receive it.

Its purpose is to reduce stigmatization, build bonds among participants, and inspire reflection in audiences to help ease polarization. With 25 to 30 members, the choir maintains a close relationship with entities such as the ARN and the JEP, becoming an active and present voice in the city’s peacebuilding ecosystem.

Sounds That Care

This is our most recent line of work, created to promote well-being through music. Through a partnership with the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, we will bring this initiative of promotion and prevention to educational institutions across nine municipalities. In addition, in collaboration with the Medellín Metro, we will carry out interventions within the transit system to commemorate Mental Health Month. These projects are part of a global concept that seeks to position the arts as a prescribed tool to improve people’s health and well-being.
