The Sunday retreat, a tradition that returns with a tango feel

Since 1892, the Sunday retreats in Bolívar Park have been a cultural symbol of Medellín, bringing together musicians and bands in a gathering that gave identity to the city. Known as the “music lover’s mass,” these performances took place an hour before the midday mass, becoming a meeting point for those who found in music a way to start the day.

Today, the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra revives this tradition with “Tangos in the Park”, a concert that pays tribute to this legacy and to the genre that marked the musical history of Medellín. In this iconic setting, surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Lido Theater and old mansions that evoke the splendor of the past, the Filarmed string ensemble will perform unforgettable classics such as The cumparsita, For a head, The day you love me, My beloved Buenos Aires and In half lightThe arrangements, by violinist Juan Rodrigo Velásquez, highlight the passionate essence of tango and its ability to move entire generations.

With this concert, the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra seeks not only to bring back the retreats to Bolívar Park, but also to connect the community with the richness of tango, strengthening the bond between the city, its history and live music.

This presentation is possible thanks to the sponsorship of Bancolombia and the support of the Mayor's Office of Medellín.
