Last Saturday, February 22, Medellín witnessed the beginning of the Roots Season of the Philharmonic Orchestra, a night full of symbolism, emotion and musical excellence that brought together more than 750 people at the Metropolitan Theater.
Spoiler Orchestra premiere, for the most curious!
The day began at 5:00 pm with the premiere of Spoiler Orchestra: the orchestra for the curious, a new project by Filarmed to bring symphonic music to the general public. In this first edition, the associate director, Tami Daniel Rueda-White, and guest director, Ana María Patiño-Osorio, explored the curiosities of the repertoire.
From the piano, Tami Daniel explained the sonic richness of each work, highlighting how the Serenade for strings Dvořák evokes the serenity of the night dew, while the Suite Stay of Ginastera and the Symphony No. 1 Brahms’ orchestras fuse different musical traditions with overwhelming force. Ana María, for her part, shared her experience working in Medellín and highlighted the unique warmth of Filarmed: “Here you feel vitality and passion for music. It is an orchestra with a unique energy; if you inspire them and give yourself to them, you will receive a powerful sound.”
The first chapter of Spoiler Orchestra will soon be available on YouTube and Spotify, allowing more people to enjoy this educational and musical experience. In addition, this conversation and exploration session will take place every Season at 5:00 pm, as a prelude to the concert.
A tribute to history and the future
Before the concert, Filarmed's executive director, Maria Catalina Prieto, offered a few words about the meaning of Raíces: “This season is not just a look at the past, but an affirmation of the present and a commitment to the future. We believe that the future of symphonic music is in Latin America, and it is our responsibility to make visible, celebrate and share the extraordinary talent of this region with the world.”
The most emotional moment of the night came with the presence of the maestro Alberto Correa, founder of the orchestra, who was greeted live. “Almost 42 years ago he dreamed of an orchestra for Medellín and gave us this invaluable jewel that today we have the privilege of safeguarding and growing,” were the words of gratitude that resonated in the room, applauding the legacy that has marked the history of Filarmed.
Music that united generations
Ana María Patiño-Osorio guided with precision and passion a repertoire that connected tradition and modernity. Ginastera's Suite Estancia opened the evening with its rhythmic force and evocations of Argentine folklore, contrasting with the melodic warmth of Dvořák's Serenade for Strings, performed standing by the musicians to enhance their expressiveness. The evening culminated with Brahms's imposing Symphony No. 1, where the orchestra displayed all its intensity and lyricism, taking the audience from dramatic tension to a majestic finale that sealed the evening brilliantly.
This concert kicked off a season that not only honours the past, but also projects the future of symphonic music in Latin America, bringing new generations closer to its rich sound. With this, Filarmed reaffirmed its commitment to connect with its audience and continue building history through music.
