In these times of great social challenges, culture feels like a vigorous wind that runs through our territory and brings us closer to other human beings with whom we share desires, uncertainties and certainties. The organizations that have assumed the responsibility of working for the comprehensive development of people in Antioquia see the urgency of a broad conversation about the world we want, a vital dialogue about the present and the future, that puts on the table our cultural diversity and the natural diversity of the territory we inhabit.

We are proud of our communities when they express their vision of the world through their rituals, customs and beliefs, with their songs and dances, and remind us that we are all a living mix of the historical peoples of this region.

Nature came first and the mountains and valleys, the flora and fauna, the rivers and the jungles, the sea coast have always been there. We are part of that great natural wealth, and those of us who inhabit this region are the image of its diversity.

In a very important place in this reflection we must deal with how to offer our children, adolescents and young people a horizon of care, enjoyment and knowledge. It is time to talk about the role of education and culture in a society that values democracy and stimulates the possibility of thinking freely, expressing oneself without restrictions and expressing oneself creatively.

It is urgent to consider how to achieve a society that respects human dignity, that protects the memory of the past and present, that is supportive, that has a high concept of justice and is moved by inequalities.

We want to ask ourselves what direction democracy will take, where the economic system is going, what we will do to be worthy of our natural and cultural diversity. Following reports of sexual harassment in the symphonic music sector, the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra undertook a process to incorporate into its actions the creation of a safe and respectful work environment for women. This process led to the definition of a Diversity and Equality Policy and the adoption of a Protocol for the prevention and response to sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination.

This protocol defines the form of action in the event of complaints of sexual violence and the approaches with which they should be addressed. An alternative approach that seeks to ensure recognition, reparation and a commitment to non-repetition; a corrective approach and a legal legal approach. It also contemplates the creation of a commission in charge of processing complaints, made up of volunteers from the orchestral staff and the administration.

Through the channel opened for this purpose, Filarmed has received two complaints, the first in December 2020, which was addressed by the commission under the alternative approach, and the second, in June 2021, in which the competence of the commission and applicability of the protocol.

The protocol has been applied strictly, with a gender focus and under the principles of due process and care for others. The parties have been heard at length and reparation formulas have been sought, understanding that the higher purpose of this action is to achieve a fundamental transformation and build a safe work environment without discrimination.

The first complaint has gone through the corresponding process and its resolution will be announced in the coming days. On Saturday, April 17 at 7:00 pm on social networks, the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra -Filarmed- will celebrate its 38 years with the Anniversary Concert, in which several chamber groups of the orchestra will celebrate by performing music from various places in the world. world. In this virtual broadcast we want to involve the entire audience in feeling the emotion of chamber music.

The Anniversary Concert is presented in alliance with Comfama, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Mayor's Office of Medellín, and the sponsorship of Bancolombia and EPM.

For Maestro Correa there have been 38 years of deep emotions and joys at Filarmed, of which four moments stand out that have marked his artistic history. First, in 1985 the execution of the Triumphs of Orff that for the first time in the world, in the same night, the staging of the three love cantatas of Carl Orff; It was made for seven and an eighth days for National Television. In its 38 years the Orchestra has spread universal music in concerts in the most different settings. Conductors of the stature of Krzystof Penderecki and Andrés Orozco-Estrada, and soloists such as Lang Lang, Santiago Cañón, Liviu Prunaru, concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw of Holland and Stefan Dohr, first horn of the Berlin Philharmonic have been on stage with Filarmed. “In the country we are proud of their very high performance, recognition and laudable cultural work.” says teacher Pinzón.

Music unites us in the distance

The pandemic forced us to adapt formats, to prepare new repertoires to strengthen chamber groups. It led us to develop new skills, such as recording ourselves independently, broadcasting our concerts on social networks, making a presence and getting closer to the public by putting music in conversation with other topics. After an unclear start, we managed to develop programming that connected with the public.

Furthermore, 2020 taught us that today, more than ever, we are not an orchestra from Medellín but from the world, Because the opening of digital channels has allowed us to expand and make our music visible without borders. Filarmed is an agent of social transformation

We bring music to the people, and we allow people to access it in multiple ways. First, we carry out a model of musical formation focused on artistic practice and the development of values. In this program they come into contact with the orchestra close to 10.000 children from several municipalities per year, and 750 They constantly participate in programs musical initiation and in orchestral practice, in San Jerónimo, La Ceja, Apartadó, Turbo, Carepa and Chigorodó. Second, We are working on strengthening a couple of programs in which we make it clear that music can transform lives, one with a neurodiverse population, called I'm a musician, and the Reconciliation Choir in which victims and participants of the conflict add their voices and give us an example of peacebuilding.

Filarmed as a cultural entity that promotes great artistic diversity leaves an indelible mark on new generations, ratifying the message of continuing to forge new paths, new artistic ideals, as well as the formation of audiences, and broad coverage at all cultural levels.
